St Bede's Episcopal Church, Santa Fe, New Mexico
The Reverend Nicolette Papanek
Biography
Nicolette Papanek was born in San Francisco, California and raised on the East and West
Coasts and in Canada. She received her undergraduate degree from Webster University in
St. Louis, Missouri. A writer by trade, prior to attending seminary, Nicolette worked in the
communications industry, primarily in public relations, advertising and training.
Nicolette received the Master of Divinity degree from Seabury-Western Theological
Seminary in 2002. She was ordained to the priesthood in 2002. Nicolette's current vocation
is transitional ministry and she is certified in Appreciative Interim Ministry I & II, and
Appreciative Coaching through the Clergy Leadership Institute.
Nicolette's most recent ministry was Rector-in-the-Interim at Trinity Episcopal Church in
Covington Kentucky from March 2010 through mid-January 2012. The blessing of her
ministry there was facilitating leadership development among parishioners of several
generations. Prior to Trinity, Nicolette was Vicar-in-the-Interim at Trinity Episcopal Church
in Russellville, Kentucky from January 2009 to January 2010. In Russellville Nicolette's
greatest joy was being part of a church that knew how to nurture one another and their
greater community. She was Rector-in-the-Interim at Christ Episcopal Church in Bowling
Green, Kentucky from September 2007 to September 2008. Her favorite achievement at
Christ Church was facilitating the creation of a vision and action plan for year-round
Stewardship and encouraging the redevelopment and redirection of Outreach.
She served as Rector-in-the-Interim at St. John's Episcopal Church in Wichita, Kansas from
June 2006 until July 2007. During her tenure, St. John's crafted their vision and began to
live into their role as a center for downtown ministry.
From October 2004 until May 2006 Nicolette was Rector-in-the-Interim at St. Thomas the
Apostle Episcopal Church in Overland Park, Kansas. The parish achieved a thirty percent
increase in stewardship while Nicolette was the Interim Rector. She also called and
empowered a youth minister who revitalized an almost-dormant youth program.
Nicolette served as Curate and Associate Rector at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in
Wichita, Kansas from 2002 to 2004. Her ministry included preaching, teaching, pastoral
care, and revitalizing stewardship. She was responsible for overseeing youth ministry and
facilitated spiritual retreats for high-school youth.
In addition to parish ministry, Nicolette serves as a Vision Facilitator for parish growth and
development and leads retreats and workshops. She has consulted in a number of parishes,
although she prefers to call what she does "Holy Meddling."
Nicolette's father, born in Vienna, Austria, was an architect and designer who studied with
Frank Lloyd Wright. He author and co-authored seven books on architecture, design and the
environment, the last of which, The Green Imperative, Nicolette edited. Her father lived in
the greater Kansas City area for the last years of his life, and taught at both the Kansas City
Art Institute and the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Nicolette's mother, born in Newton,
Massachusetts, was trained as a jewelry designer and in her younger years worked as a
clothes designer and seamstress. She lived in California. Nicolette's older sister is deceased.
Her younger sister, a sculptor, lives in Georgia.
Nicolette's primary passion--beyond the church--is art quilting. Her other interests in life are
indoor and outdoor sports: reading, organic gardening, cooking and napping. She keeps
company, when permitted, with a household despot known respectfully as Cleopatra, Queen
of the Nile, a sixteen-pound calico cat.
About her calling in general, and to St Bede's in particular, Nicolette says, "My goal is that
God's blessings be known and celebrated, and people flourish and grow even during times of
uncertainty and change. My greatest joy is bringing out God's best in others with love,
laughter, and lunch, whether it is an actual meal I cook, or the holy meal of the Eucharist.
The skills I bring from my secular career make me a priest who understands and deeply
appreciates people and their needs. I love what I do and feel incredibly blessed to be joining
St Bede's in their journey in Christ."
