Throughout the Episcopal Church a parish vestry corresponds to a board of directors of a secular organization. It elects the Rector of the parish and oversees its business and secular affairs. George Washington was a vestry member. The Vestry meets monthly to discuss, reflect and take action on the many aspects of Parish life. It consists of the Rector and nine lay members of the parish, two of which are selected as Senior and Junior Wardens. Vestry members are elected at the annual parish meeting held each January, to serve three-year terms of office. The Bishop appoints one of the Vestry members as senior warden, and the Vestry elects the Junior Warden. The Vestry elects a treasurer and clerk who attend regular meetings. The Rector, by Diocesan Canon, presides at Vestry meetings, is a member of the Vestry and has a vote. Parishioners are invited to attend monthly meetings. It is important to the Vestry that all parishioners feel welcome to share thoughts and ideas about God’s vision for us as a Christian community. Portfolios of Vestry Members Each vestry member is assigned and undertakes a personal interest in specific administrative areas of the parish through the functions of policy, oversight and resources, in support of the management function of the Priest-in-Charge. Committee chairs have direct responsiblity but look to this system of portfolios as a means of interfacing with the Vestry.
