A Mission in HondurasThrough a Presbyterian friend, Gail Willson, I learned of still another project supported by our church: El Hogar, whose “mission is to provide a loving home and education in a Christian environment for abandoned, orphaned and hopelessly poor children, enabling them to fulfill their ultimate potential as productive and caring citizens of Honduras.” Gail knew about this remarkable work because her son Doug spent time there working with the children. Recently, The Episcopal Relief and Development office gave El Hogar a grant that enabled them to expand their curriculum at The Farm, a place where 60 boys attend the Agricultural School and learn sustainable farming techniques and practices sorely needed in their country. In all, there are 200 children who are benefiting from the educational experiences at El Hogar each year. This mission is primarily supported by the American and Canadian Churches. Its headquarters is in Winchester, MA. Our neighboring Bishop, Bishop O'Neill of Colorado, heads the Board of Directors for this project. There are many ways that we could become personally involved in the work of El Holgar. We could sponsor a child's education, housing, or a full year's experience there. We could give an unrestricted gift. For example, a gift of $100 would provide drinking water at the Farm for one year. Or, we could join a team to share our skills. For example, James Campi, a dentist from Christ Church, St. Michaels, Maryland, is setting up a permanent dental clinic at El Hogar. Right now he is looking for a pool of volunteer dentist, hygienists and assistants to form a team to go to El Hogar twice a year to attend to the dental needs of the children. Of course, we will continue to support the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund as we faithfully fill our mite boxes. But we might engage in a more personal experience. I am going to post information I got from Gail on the bulletin board in the Common Room. Take a look. Think about it. Peggy Garrett © 2007 St. Bede’s Episcopal Church, Santa Fe, New Mexico
